Submission for the Global Game Jam 2024, made by me and two friends
What's this game?
Me and two of my friends wanted to challenge ourselves and participate in the Global Game Jam 2024 since our university was one of the hosting sites. It's a 48 hours challenge which took place over the weekend. This was my first game jam so it was really fun to do it in person as well as online. The modifier was "make me laugh", so we came up with the concept for Jelly World where you play as a Gummy Bear stuck in a lab in Jelly World. You complete puzzles to escape from rooms to eventually reach the portal back to your gummy bear world. All the while Jelly characters taunt you with funny but annoying voice lines and try to ruin your puzzle progress by pushing objects around.
My Contributions
Our team had no animators, so I created some classic programmer animations to bring life to the Jelly characters as well as interactable objects like cabinets or moving platforms using Unreal Engine Timelines. I was also responsible for creating the base for the AI so that they can shout voice lines and look at you, I made the Logic behind the pipe room puzzle, Pipe room AI behaviour, and all interactable objects in the game.
Reflections
The game was a success for sure, forced me to try and be as efficient and thorough with planning and organising workload as possible. The game is a little more difficult than we planned, mostly due to the lack of playtesting, so that 's a valuable lesson for me. In the future I will ensure to allocate some time for playtesting.
